The Aviator

If there was one item that made an impact before the winter chill even set in this autumn it was the aviator jacket.

As soon as the models at Burberry stepped out on to the runway back in February, buyers, bloggers and journalists became flustered with excitement for the military aviator trend, and one item in particular; The Shearling jacket.

Those fortunate enough were able to purchase theirs straight after the show, but the rest of the fashion hungry public have been anticipating their arrivals in store. As we fast approach winter the time has come and there are many styles to chose from.

It is easy to see the appeal of this hardwearing coat. “I looked at an aviator jacket in the archive, I realized it could be as versatile as the trench – strong, sexy, masculine and feminine” explained Burberry designer Christopher Bailey.

Coming in a selection of shapes and colours from cropped to oversized collars to parka styles. You can chose from tough leather and denim exteriors but the comfort of the sheep fur or shearling lining on the inside gives them the snug factor, and those huge collars block out the cold. They mix tough and delicate making them ideal to wear with anything from party dresses, skin tight trousers or simply just jeans and knitwear. It is a classy casual look that is easy to pull off.

At the very high end we have of course the Burberry Prorsum or the Just Cavalli versions to the interpretations on the high street, such as New Look, or H&M’s real leather one complete with buckles and straps.
If you are a fan of shearling but not so much the leather, then Lee has a great denim look, as seen at Phillip Lim.

Never have we lusted after winter so much.
